Daytona quote:
“Until you actually experience a 24 hour race it is very difficult to truly understand it. You have got to experience it. Just like a start in the Cup or Busch Series race here at Daytona. You have to experience it to know what to do the next time. No matter how many veterans try and explain it, you can't really, totally prepare yourself for that.”

Rolex Fact:
Lewis will start 28 th in the Rolex 24 field after posting the 10 th fastest qualifying time. His time was disallowed after a paperwork infraction.

classy
Shane Lewis is making his third Rolex 24 Daytona Prototype start in 2006. Previously, he has raced cars in the GT class ('97-2000), the former SRPII ('01) and AGT ('02) classes. He has also made a number of starts in the Grand-Am Cup on the Rolex 24 weekend. Other Daytona successes include a run to second in the GTS class at the Paul Revere 250 in '03 and the Daytona Endurance Championship in 1996.

In his career Lewis has competed in all major styles of cars currently or recently running in American sports car racing; Daytona Prototype, LMP, GTS, GT, AGT as well as SPEED World Challenge and Grand-Am Cup Grand Sport (GS) and Sport Touring (ST) classes.

round beginnings
Like his NASCAR Busch Series champion co-driver, Randy LaJoie ( Kannapolis , NC ), Shane Lewis got his start in oval racing. Lewis built and maintained his first street stock race car for the Willow Springs ( Calif. ) oval as a high school student. He moved to road racing when, while racing on the oval, he saw the sports cars lapping on the nearby Willow Springs road course. Becoming intrigued by the cars, he sought-out a job at the track and moved on from there. He has continued to race on ovals on occasion including an ARCA start at Atlanta Motor Speedway in ('01).

single-seater
Shane Lewis is an avid motorcyclists. In fact, he is such an enthusiast that he has made the cross-country trip from his native Lancaster, Calif. to his home in Jupiter, Fla. three times. Twice he has made the trip alone, once with the Uncle who first taught him to ride motorcycles. Last year, after leading the Fontana round of the Rolex Series, Lewis rode a classic, old-school chopper that he built himself halfway back to Jupiter before being forced to forgo the remainder of the trip when he was called away to test.
