SHANE
LEWIS EARNS TOP-10 FINISH NORTH OF THE BORDER
-FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE-
BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, August 17, 2003 - Shane Lewis, of Jupiter,
Fla.,
fought through faulty gearbox electronics to earn a top-10 American
Le
Mans Series (ALMS) GT class finish at Mosport International Raceway
on
today. Lewis drove the first portion of the two hour and 45-minute
race
at the Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada-track in the No. 63 ACEMCO
Automotive/Yokohama Tires Ferrari 360 GT Modena before turning the
driving chores over to Phoenix, Arizona's Terry Borcheller. Starting
tenth in GT class, Lewis charged the silver and yellow Ferrari close
to
the class top-five despite an electronics glitch that would change
the
semi-automatic gearbox from fourth gear to sixth without driver input.
The duo would end the day eighth in class, 17th overall.
"
We had a tough day out there," said Lewis. "Actually, the
whole weekend
was tough. We knew going in that the engine didn't have the horsepower
to hang with the Porsches down the backstraight. And, by using the
paddle-shifter gearbox, we didn't have the gear selection choices
over
the Ferrari's that had changed over to a sequential [gear] box. To
make
matters worse the electronics started to tell the gearbox to switch
from
fourth gear up to sixth once we hit a certain rpm. We figured out
what
that rev limit was after some trial and error so we were able to
adapt
our driving and shift into fifth before the limit. All of that hurt
our
lap times. Either way, the car shifting to sixth on its own or us
short-shifting to fifth, hurt us. The Yokohama tires did a great
job.
The car felt pretty good out there but we just don't have the power
or
the development pieces that we need to compete with the Porsches
or the
other Ferraris. That's hurting us but the guys on the team are working
really hard and Terry and I are getting more out of this car, lap
after
lap, than anyone could."
